Elder Care Tips

Elder Care Tips

Here are suggestions based on my own experience caring for my Elderlings. I’ll keep adding more as I think of them.

  • Get them hearing aids as soon as the slightest hearing loss occurs so there is time to get used to them before senility sets in. When they are unfamiliar and someone is very forgetful, it is almost impossible.
  • Encourage hobbies that can be done at home with poor vision. I’m wishing we had introduced hand crochet when it was still possible to learn. Painting with large brushes/bright colors might be nice.
  • Simple things like trash cans (and trash bags) that contrast to the color of the wall/floor can make a huge difference.
  • Establish a laundry system as soon as possible so there is no question about which clothes are soiled and and where to find clean clothes.
  • A handy snack area can keep them from trying to do things they no longer should in the kitchen. For several years we did really well by keeping a bowl of fresh fruit and some favorite cookies and crackers in their daytime sitting area. They may reach a stage where they start to overeat due to boredom and not being able to feel when they are full anymore, though. So keep an eye on it and start rationing snacks, if needed.
  • Taking melatonin before bed can help when sleep schedules start to get crazy, but it doesn’t always work. We had to secretly switch to decaf coffee. Also, eventually, motion-activated cameras outside of their bedroom can be set to wake the caregiver if they start to roam around at night. Be prepared for some nights when they are really active.
  • Keeping everything in the same place can be really helpful, but there will be some days when they don’t remember, even if it has been in the same spot for seven years. The less change the better, though.
